Diary from The Netherlands

Hola Amigos y Amigas! Wait, why am I writing in Spanish when I'm now in Netherlands? Fuck Dutch, I'm going Espanol!

Dear readers, friends, strangers, it's been A LONG WHILE since I updated this blog.  I know I've been lazy with the blog lately and it's not really due to the lack of travelling! I've been travelling for such - mainly for work.  But it's just a lot going on in my life now!  As most of you know, I've recently moved my ASS out of comfy warm tropical Singapore to cold rainy Netherlands due to job rotation.  And to be honest don't ask me why I chose Netherlands if the weather is so bad.  I got a chance to move somewhere, I took it - weather permitting or not. And Europe ain't that bad - Netherlands ain't too!  And it's been some hectic (ok not really that hectic) months settling down, meeting and finding new friends, getting myself acquainted with this  new exciting country.

It all started with the moving, the administrative chore of getting registered and settling in, making my home a home, stocking up my already furnished apartment with more stuff, finding a gym, yoga studio, joining new activities and just going out there!  And at the same time, work goes on and I still had to travel for work whilst all these were going on!  And you start wondering "where the heck has time gone?"  It's at that stage that you start realizing that your day is just so jam packed with stuff to do, activities, meetups that you miss the alone time at home, chilling, watching some TV and basically do nothing!  And there are still so much I want to do, learn that I find I don't have time to do everything!  Well that's not happened in Singapore before!  I guess that's what happens when you get out of your comfort zone and into a new environment - makes you take that extra step out of your circle and do stuff.  3 months into Netherlands life and I have NOT taken any short weekend trip to neighboring cities/countries - my weekends are so scarce!

Many people have asked me if I miss home - to be honest I don't right now.  Seriously.  And that's because I have just so much to do that I really don't have time to start missing home or anything.  And also, I'm like a caged bird set free - I'm enjoying my freedom right now and definitely do not miss the cage.  I can do anything I want at home - walk around butt naked, half naked, eat anywhere, organize my stuff the way I like it without anyone saying or nagging about it.  I live my own life now without judgement, and I do what I want and like.  I'm learning new stuff and doing things I've always wanted to but never had the time or companions to do so - pole dancing, hiking the nature, salsa workshops (soon), kite surfing (soon), acroyoga... See what I mean - where got time to think about my life back in Singapore???  Occasionally, when the weather sucks here, I miss the warmth of Singapore, the convenience of our public transport when I have to wait 20mins if I missed the train by 30seconds, the food (when I don't have time to cook).  My tennis buddies - still haven't managed to secure one here.  And when I have to start washing my own clothes, mop the floor - I think about how privileged I was not having to do those at home.  I'm not trying to insinuate anything but I'm having great time and fun with new friends here - making promises to meet up, the gatherings with these people - whilst back home it was always so hard to meet my oldies but goodies that I feel so connected here.  And probably because of my adventurous nature, I'm finding I fit in well here with the new friends I've met who are also into adventure!  Sure, I miss the fun mindless conversations with my Singaporean friends talking about all news close to heart but honestly it doesn't keep me up at night thinking about those.  It's likely just a phase - just like how the honeymoon period is always the greatest before everything slides down.

There may come a day when I'll break down suddenly in my HUGE comfy super king size bed, missing everything that is HOME.  That day is not today.  Maybe that comes with my adaptable nature, my wondering mind that just goes haywire at times thinking of different things.  The fact that I love travelling and being out.  The fact that I'm really a bird, happy to be set free.  It's been real fun living on my own, stepping out of my comfort zone.  It grows you, makes you a lot more mature and mindful.  I'm loving it now.

So this is my update for now. Everyone I'm happy and doing good in my new life here in Netherlands.  Yes, the weather still sucks pretty much more often but when it's sunny it's really really nice!  But you know those sunny days are as rare as the loch ness monster sightings.  And my dear friends who plan to come visit, you're more than welcome! I have a really small spare room without a bed but you can set up your own sleeping bag.  Or, if you prefer I have a sofa bed in the living room that's big enough for 2! And in exchange, you can do my laundry and clean up my apartment :) sounds fair?
Travelog will come soon I promise (hopefully).  I've been to Manchester, Mexico/Acapulco and did some really great trips!  Finland coming soon.  Hopefully I get the time to write those down and share them up here.

Peace out!

A Brand New Year

It's been a month into the new year, and frankly it doesn't quite feel any different.  No new vibes, new aspirations or new directions.  It feels just like the old 2014.  Where is that "It's a new year, time for a change" shout-out? Nadda.  Maybe it's a case of coming back from an awesome vacation over Christmas and New Year to this same old life.  Like becoming sober after a long wonderful night of being high on weed.  You suddenly feel a sense of loss, a sense of nonchalant and nothingness.  Where's my life heading revelation.  Sure, you would say "Snap out of it!", "It was just a vacation. Everything that came with it is OVER!". Isn't it the sad truth? Cruel, sad truth.  One that you (I) very much do not want to face with.  The "Whatever happened during vacation stays within the vacation".  What if life is just a vacation that never ends?  Wouldn't that be fucking awesome!?

Looking back to the past year, it had been pretty good.  I've travelled to 6 different countries, I felt appreciated at work, I've worked with awesome, fun people and had plenty of fun, gotten darn drunk and made a fool out of myself.  I've embarked on a brand new fitness program and I'm seeing results - a stronger, leaner body and am liking the toned look on my body, the muscles that peeked out when flexed.  I'm liking the fact that I'm finally putting more effort in yoga, in attempting and practicing the tough poses though much more could be done on my flexibility.  Re-establishing contact with someone I thought was long lost and forgotten, slightly re-igniting that flutter which I guessed is just me.

If I could travel back in time, I would so go back to re-do some of the things I had done, right the wrong, did something different, did something more, spout more punch lines in response to a joke, be more proactive than reactive in some situations, with someone, and maybe, just maybe, the results would be different, more what I had hoped it would turn out to be.  But life does not have a rewind button.  What was done is done, what happened already did.  Suck it up and move forward, sulk a little and pick it up.  What is life without regrets?  A fucking irritating one!  But inevitable.

Had a talk with my insurance/financial agent on what my goals are, what do I want in life so she can help to plan.  And my mind blanked out.  What do I want?  A house when I am 35? Sure, if that's what's the norm.  But do I really want that? Heck no idea.  Put it in plan to start a savings/investment plan sounds like a good idea.  Maybe I'll need the money to buy a fucking sail boat!  Deep down, I think I want an adventure, but my heart seems to be slowing down when that idea is to do it alone.  I like an adventure, but to do it with someone, a partner, a similar minded adventurer.  To set sail and wander around the world, going as we please, stopping when we want.  The world is out oyster.  Would I give up everything I have right now (not that I have much) for the adventurer to take me away? Yes.  The question is if the adventurer will take me away.

It's just the start of the new year.  Who knows what will happen, or what will come next.  Yea, the world could disappear the next day. Yup if the world were to end, that would be my preference - for it to just disappear in an instant. Poof! Gone! No need to worry or fear or run.  I'll let life take me wherever it wants to take me.  Cruising, that's what I'm good at.  It's a gamble for sure.  I could be going for a great ride or a ride to hell.  Risks! It's all about taking risks!  I took one big risk with that trip (nope didn't get kidnapped in Mexico), and look where that took me!  Interpret that yourself.  And I'm really not a big risk-taker.  Gosh, what was I thinking!  Need to work on myself.

2015, I've known my best mates for 20 years! Getting old.  It's scary when you get to the age when all your friends are married and with kids.  And you suddenly realized you're surrounded by baby pictures and pregnant women.  Them envious of your single carefree life travelling around the world, and me looking in and thinking "at least you always have someone to go back to when life gets shitty, and a shoulder to cry over".  Grass is always greener on the other side.  So much to do but no one to do it with.  Maybe a change in environment will spice things up.  Giddy-up! Another 11 months to go to another new fucking year!  Happy 50th anniversary my country!

Speaking of which, after 1 year of telling myself I'm not gonna colour my hair, I couldn't resist it anymore.  Purple is the new black! Didn't want to go too far as this already took me 3H, but after seeing the effect, darn should have gone further and bolder.  Then again, I'll have to camp at the salon.

Fast and Furious - What have I done the past year!!!

It is that time of the year once again.  Seems like only yesterday that I wrote the same thing about 2012 - Cliche!! But once again, the year is coming to an end, how fast is that!  And I'm writing this ahead of time now because for the first time in 6 years, I have no plans to be anywhere this Xmas and New Year!  Well, I had a plan to visit somewhere or I thought there was a plan, but it went kaput/cancelled/denied.I guess I knew from the start that it wasn't really gonna happen anyway, was it.  Words, easy to say.  Disappointed? I guess a little yes....

That being said, it just means I'm gonna be boring back home and probably sleep through NYE. It happens, I get lazy back home.

2013 - Ah the supposed new beginnings.  At least that was what I told myself back in 2012.  I told myself a lot of things in 2012 that I was supposed to do or not do in 2013 - Like not to cry over someone again.  But reality has its way of twisting words and resolve, and it didn't plan out as I had hoped - hurting over the old one, yearning over the could-have and pondering over the 'is it?', at one point it seemed as if whatever resolve made in 2012 was going to be whitewashed by the newly found emotional person who is typing this piece!

2013 - I started the first day of 2013 being extremely hungover, and puked on the boat and just felt really terrible the entire day.  Yes, it was a result of the hard partying on NYE.  Yea, sungsom and redbull mix isn't exactly friendly.

Oh and I dyed my hair red for once and it was fun!  I probably can't do that anymore now that I'm in a different industry, but at least I did it..
I had a year of wonderful travels and knowing great people from around the world and I am truly grateful for that!  My 2 weeks impromptu vacation to the Philippines brought much joy to my broken soul.  I got to meet whalesharks, thresher sharks, immersed myself in the wonderful underwater world in Bohol and saw the smallest creature in the world - the tarsiers! And finally able to tell the world I've been to Boracay!  That fancy, touristy place in Philippines that everyone raves about but seriously isn't really all that fantastic!  The trip presented me with great opportunities to be the adventurous self that I am (though it was not the most adventurous trip I've had, in fact nothing really went wrong in terms of mis-adventure this time which is unusual for me), and meet with great people - The fun-loving bunch from Taiwan, the adorable hip Finnish couple, the young danish lads, and the south african Divemaster!  We had loads of fun and these are people I really enjoy being with and getting to know!  This was the trip where I missed my boat to another destination because I was too hungover from the Valentines' Day party the night before, or was it the wee morning hours before? But all is not lost as a missed chance brought about a new opportunity!  I got to travel with the Finns and that was one of the best decisions I've ever made because they are so chill and cool.  And they are likely to pop by for a visit soon!

My another 2 weeks impromptu vacation to Flores was another gem.  It was amazing how raw that place still is and how nice generally the people in Flores are.  At least I think so, but that is probably because I was a tourist there and not living there long term.  It wasn't overly populated with backpackers or tourists, which is what I really admire and like and throughout my trip I can almost say I did not see a single tourist from China!  Except for that fateful day when a Shanghainese walked into the dive shop. Damn, she spoilt my record!  But it was real nice to be in a place that is still not swarmped by Chinese tourists.  Also, Flores brought about much joy and great friends and people.  An unexpected stay in labuan bajo turned into a week long diving vacation and brought me so close to the people I dived with - The nonchalant Russian, the rapid fire Spanish and the cute sexy American.  Not to mention the locals who partied with us.  I never expected to build such close ties with these people but I guess I did, and it brought me much joy to be in that place and for those 2 weeks, I forgot the fact that I had a job waiting for me back home.  It was also a trip that made me think twice about my life (but more on that in a bit).

What was also nice was visitor(s)! Visitors from my travels coming over and spending time and having fun!  Which was real nice because most of the time, people you meet on travels are just that - people you meet on travels.  They add you on facebook and never really catch up again.  And these are friend(s) I treasure who visited.  And I am expecting more next year - My adorable Finns and how can I forget the Canadian might be making a repeat appearance!

This was a year of bad health for me.  I have no diagnosis for what I'm sufferring or have sufferred but it has taken a toll on me physically and mentally.  Starting with the insomnia, which begun in 2012, it got so bad at one point I just felt like killing myself.  Waking up at 1-2am, falling back to sleep at 3, and waking up at 5 again.  Torture!  Someone told me that I probably need to sleep with someone (doesn't have to be sexual) to feel the security, comfort and be able to doze comfortably.  And I must say, I agree with him.  That was a spot-on remedy which worked.  But I do not have that luxury to have someone to cuddle me constantly.  And so, the insomnia looms its ugly head on and off on occassions and I to suffer its wrath!  Then it was the mysterious case of the back pain that almost paralysed me for 3 days.  What was scary was not just that fact that I was bedridden for 3 days, but the fact that for no reason, the backpain morphed into something so serious that I literally couldn't move or breathe.  I pride myself on the fact that I try to live as healthily as I can, and I exercise to keep myself fit and injury-free, but this episode brought me straight down to earth and really shook me to the bones.  Anything can happen in a flick of the hand, just like that, and you probably will never know what hit you.  Just like my fucked up digestive system, for whatever reason, it is a little fucked up right now.  And it is not a good feeling.  Maybe it has to do with the insomnia, maybe it has to do with me.  Who knows?  The doctors don't at the moment.  But maybe I just need to get checked for it.  When I get my butt over to the doctor's.  If I ever get my butt over.

2013 - I just realised I have come to my 10th year of working life!  10! Fuck! Where did all those years go?  4th job in 10 years!  How did I get so old?  Just a few days ago, I was reading a magazine and looking at a caption saying 1991 and I thought yea that was not too long ago only for my mathematical mind to set in, telling me that was 22 years ago!!!

Yes, I started my 4th job right about when my 10th year anniversary started.  And it was scary.  It was a right decision to leave the crap that was my last job, not for the fact that the company was not good.  In fact I liked the company, I liked the people in my Singapore office!  I just didn't like my department, and the way they treat the staff.  And of course, that particular colleague.  I wanted to move, but yet again I didn't want to move.  I had an opportunity from outside my department which I yearned for, but after months of waiting, it didn't materialize and I understood that it was time to move on.  Was it a right decision? Professionally, I'm in a better department now.  But deep down inside, I do question myself alot about what I have done in my entire 10 years.  I'm ok at my job, it's a comfortable line of work for me and I know what I'm doing.  I'm not great at it but I manage.  Passion? I don't think so, but I survive.  I admire those people who have the fire and passion in what they do, the dive instructors who live on whatever they get paid when they have a customer but truly enjoy and love what they are doing, people who quit their job to follow their lives and passion. What do I live for?  What is my passion in life and what do I want?  I cannot and do not know how to answer that question.  My trip to Flores really hit me hard and made me think a lot about my direction in life, influenced by the people I met there.  What do I like?  I like the ocean, the sea, the freedom, the adventure.  But I don't like the hassle, and the administrative part of planning an adventure.  I have a friend who told me to set up an adventure agency.  Sounds like a great plan, but the problem is I can do adventure but I'm not the most organized person in the world!  I live by the organized mess philosophy.  Look at my room and you will know.  Sure, I can plan and when I get really into the excitement of a place, there are a lot of things I can do and dig out.  But multiply that to a great scale of 10 people?  Geez did I mention that I hate crowds?  Thinking about what to eat for dinner when breakfast is not over?  I can't even think about breakfast when I wake up!  So herein lies my dilemma.  Which I may never solve.  For all you know, I might elope with someone and end up somewhere at the very ends of the world, living on a yacht, cruising through the oceans around the world.  Now that would be a story worth telling.

The nice dinner gathering with my ex-colleagues and boss was a great reminder of the me back in the older days - how much younger I was then, how much fire I had in me, how much I didn't really care back then.  I travelled the world with excitement and eagerness that befits a young girl, I loved the fact that every trip brought me to a different place.  I loved that fact that I enjoyed the company of my colleagues and I had a great boss who supported us.  I could just pack my bags and be gone for 2 weeks without a care of what was happening, come back and pack again for the next one!  Nobody to make me think twice about going some place, no worries that made me go "I dread going away".  I jumped at every opportunity to fly and get out to the world!  And I really realy love my team - the Charlie's Angels.  And I do miss The Boss.  And I came to realize it is probably real hard to find a boss like him ever.  I've only ever had 2 great bosses in my life and they are both ex-bosses now.

That is not to say I don't like travelling now.  I still do.  I guess I'm one of those who can't sit still.  Need to be on the move.  Can't imagine me having a deskbound job where I just sit in the same office, on the same chair facing the monitor day in day out, 5 days a week, 8 hours a day.  Of course, even when I travel, I still face the same monitor, but it feels different to be out of the office and be somewhere, interact with new people.  But it seems that it gets harder and harder to face the same arguments, to have to find issues, report and start the process of reporting the finding to people who sometimes just do not seem to comprehend.  And then the fighting starts and it gets tiring to have to fight your way through something that is so apparent.  But such is the job of an auditor isn't it?

Relationship.  Relationship with people is a funny thing.  Let's start with the new company.  There is a very weird dynamics between the people of the department.  It is very weird till this very day.  Although we are a team of 3 auditors, there is absolutely no team dynamics present.  Or rather, there was no team dynamics before I joined.  They are very individual and separated persons, and even though they work in the same office, they go their separate ways during lunch.  It is a very strange phenomenon I noticed which took me by surprise.  You would expect that colleagues would lunch together, but no!  Come lunch time, one of them would just walk out quietly and the other would just stay in or lunch somewhere.  No talk no nothing.  The very first time it happened, I still didn't quite grasp the fact and was waiting for that colleague to come back for lunch.  And then there is the manager.  So the fact that we auditors do not lunch with the manager, well not really that strange but still a little harder to comprehend.  It is quite individualistic over here.  And sometimes, I don't blame this situation!  I lunch with that one colleague because she is the one who has nobody to lunch with.  But I've come to realize that we have no common topics to lunch with, and that is exactly the reason why the other colleague chose to go his own way.  And it is indeed quite awkard at times, lunching with her in complete silence, racking my brain on topics we could talk about.  I do not like awkard silence.  As much as possible I try to think of something to say to fill the silence, but try as I may, I couldn't do it often enough.  So as it is, I lunched on my own a few times, preferring to read my book over lunching in silence.  And it is these times that make me really miss my old team.  How we always talk and laugh and discuss about things outside of work.  Believe me, I am as private a person as anyone could be and I do not like to share private matters with colleagues.  But with my old team, it felt natural.

Relationship with my friends and others.  I have abused my journal too much this past year, writing tons and tons about the happenings around me.  There are things I should have said to people but chose to keep it to myself, and things I should not have said or done but I did.  They may not be pleasing to the ears, but I guess sometimes I should express what I feel.  Maybe it will help my insomnia!  But still it may be hard to say it in person, so I'm just gonna write them down here, if you read my blog, you will read it.  If not, well....
  • I will be lying if I said I am not disappointed that my besties and I have not met up/ catch up on things since a gazillion years.  I guess the last time we gathered was June 2012.  And that gathering was a gathering of the hubbies and kids, not really what I had envisioned.  But such is life isn't it?  It has come to a stage where the only gatherings we ever had were baby showers, baby 1st birthdays or house warming, and even those are usually not in full force and weren't much catching up involved.  Is it so hard to find a day or even just a 2H dinner once to come out with the girls and talk?  Believe me, i've tried to organize but as always it has never been a success.  I could blame kids for taking the attention away from the mummies, I could blame my besties for not making the effort to try to organize a gathering, but I guess that would seem selfish of me.  I could also blame myself for always being out of town during those baby showers, for not making enough effort to maybe make a personal visit to each of your houses, or simply just giving up trying to gather us after so many failed attempts.  But what I really want to say is I really do miss you guys very very much.  I miss the days when we didn't have the families to tie us down and talked like there was no tomorrow.  But we grow up, and priorities change.  I love you girls very much and do wish to catch up with you girls, just us without distractions.
  • I want to tell him that it really did hurt a lot what happened and what you said.  I guess I didn't tell you because I still cared for your feelings more than how I felt.  But in part that was what was holding me back and I couldn't let go.  I poured my heart and soul for months, only for you to say that you never wanted it to be this way.  And that one sentence basically erased all those promises you made, all those words you said and the things we were supposed to be doing together.  How hard I fell and how deep I hurt.  And it took me a very long time to go pass all that, to move on and forget about everything.  I'm happy that you are happy now.
  • To that person who tortured me so much in my last job - I hate you!  I don't know you personally, and maybe you are a good person, but working with you killed me physically and mentally and I couldn't stand you as a colleague.  The degrading way you talk to people, like we are all stupid and guilty folks.  The way you lose your patience and temper and started shouting at the auditees - complete and utter disgrace of the profession.  The way you used to say 'I work more hours on weekends than you do', completely demolishing my entire week of hard work.  I don't work for you, and you have no rights to measure how much effort and work I put in based on your crazy idea of working on weekends.  And my weekend is my time, I do not have to entertain you on weekends!  I do not have the obligation to tell you anything about my personal life and I certainly do not have an obligation to make you feel looked after even overseas.
  • Been missing someone.. Maybe it's time to stop that missing...

You know, they said that 2013 is a good year for the Saggitarius.  Good for work, and personal relationships.  Especially you singles out there, romance aplenty and new romance may bloom into something concrete.  I guess I'm old enough to take all these with a pinch of salt, but at the same time enjoy reading them and seeing how they pan out.  Afterall, your destiny lies not with predictions and fortune telling, but in your own hands.

Next year is a new year.  2014.  I don't make resolutions.  I tried, but they are not helpful or useful.  You just do the things you want to do.  You don't need resolutions for them.  I wait for magic to happen, as I always do.  I wait for friends to come (hopefully when I'm around in town).  I wait for my sister to get married, so she'll move out of the room so I can have the room to myself and remodel the room! (throw away her bed, change mine to a bigger one, remove her desk, change a bigger wardrobe etc etc)  I wait for more adventures.  I wait for the day when I finally say "I've had it with the 3H to and fro travel to work, I quit!".  And I wait for the day I strike the 10M ToTo lottery.  So I can wait for the day I buy my yacht.

I think I might just grow out my hair. To long. Ya, just for my sister's wedding. We shall see till it gets to shoulder length.  If I can still stand it.  Check back in a couple months' time.

Purged

Drinking - bane or boon? Bane for making me do something I would never do in public, or in front of someone. Boon for finally purging my feelings and emotions and finally got down to deleting anything that would remind me of that memory.  So that I'll never do it again.

Sorry Alex for shocking the shit out of you.  I still blame you for asking/saying whatever it was that triggered it.  Sorry Tio, drunk texting sometimes do not make much sense, especially at the height of the emotional drunk craze (at least half of what I said was true, or all of what I said???)

Shit, so embarrassing!!! Fuck!  Note to self: Stop talking when you are high!!! Whatever is in your mind, just stop it from being verbalized.  I need to stop the bottles from abusing me now.

Peace out! I'm fine.  Mighty fine :)

Fuck that back - I'm high on painkillers

So it is, on a gloomy Sunday morning, when I woke up to excruciating pain in my right lower back.  The same pain that started last Thursday but kind of subsided the next day.  As I painstakingly hauled myself off the bed, each movement eliciting a small yelp of pain, each move of limbs like an ageing 80-year-old grandma, I felt the world spinning, the vision blurred and stars appeared.  As I brushed my teeth, I felt myself slowly but surely crumbling to the floor, slowly to be engulfed by darkness.  That was when I knew.  I knew I couldn't move. I couldn't brush my teeth.  With the lightning speed of a crutches holding grandma, I went back to bed, trying out every possible position - left, right, center, back flat, tummy flat, curling like a foetus, trying to get comfortable and squeeze in a little bit of sleep to fight the dizziness.  None worked.  The pain persisted.  There were times when, if I hold my breathe for a moment, I can get 5 seconds of peace, of nirvana where the pain temporarily cease to exist for that magical moment and I felt normal for once.  I did that for long periods of time, to kid myself into believing all is not lost.  But, although I don't use much air when diving, I can't possibly not breathe for long.  And the pain eventually hits back with a vengeance.  A fucking mad man on a vengeance run.

What happened?  If I had an answer, I would not be feeling so lost!

It all started on a kinda ok Thursday in the office.  I was in the office, doing my usual thing, not exerting any pressure of force.  I took the shuttle bus to lunch, still healthy and kicking and jumping.  When I finally arrived at FOOD, my hand automatically went to grasp my right lower back, by the side when the pain first hit.  I shook it off, thinking maybe just my imagination or just something that will pass.  As I walked along the food feast, all the food suddenly did not appeal to me at all as time and again, I find myself clutching tight to my right lower back.  Not the spinal cord, but the right of it.  The pain did not go away, and each step I took felt like thousand knives stabbing at me.  A friend told me to be careful as one of his friend got hospitalized for 3 days due to mysterious back pain.  I was scared.  As the day past, it seemed as if the pain would go away. I had no trouble really walking or sleeping.  As it was, I felt good enough to play tennis the next day!  I know now that people will lament the fact that I deserved it. I should have known better than to play tennis.  But I did know!  He pain was gone, I felt fine, and when I did play tennis, my movements were not restricted.  Though a little stiff, but no problems at all.

Then came Saturday, when I only felt muscle ache along my thighs and no where else!  So I thought I must be fine!  Who knew, the back pain decided to punish me for whatever reason unbeknown to me.  That was when on a Saturday night, I tossed and turned, trying to find the best position to sleep.  It started out well, but crisis happened in the middle of the night, when just by laying there, the pain stabbed me hard!  So hard it was difficult to breathe.  So hard it was difficult to sleep as pain kept me up.  I tried holding my breath, but I can only hold that many times.  Sleep came and go intermittently.  It felt like someone snapped my muscle tendons and a thousand knights were trampling on the snapped tendons like crumbling tofu.

So it is, that I'm sitting hunched by my laptop, typing this, leaving a legacy in the event that you don't hear from me.  It is Sunday, there are no X-ray facilities or any form of scanning facilities open in the country called Singapore.  I can only get more painkillers and see what the doc says.  It is the sort of pain that makes me go "Just fucking kill me and end my misery".  Exactly the same feeling I got back in Jan 2013 when I got really sick, with a fucking migraine and fainting spell.  These are the times, when you just want to fucking not feel a thing.  Like when your life fucks you up, your work destroying your mere existence, people around you hurting you left, right and center, when your heart breaks into a million pieces.  These are the times, when I go "I don't want to feel a thing".  It happened too many times in 2012.  I told myself I'm not going to let it happen this year.  Of course, any attempt is futile.  You know life plays its own games, and you have no say in any of the games and rules of life.  At least so far, I have tried to protect myself from emotional pain.  Believe me I have tried, and it is not easy.  The heart is always rebellious.  But I've tried to condition it to the frequency of my brain.  There has been near misses but no major disaster YET.  Learn to pull away when an impending disaster seems to loom.

But physical pain?  Shit!  That really sucks.  How do you distance yourself away from physical pain? Maybe morphine helps. For those who know me, I have a pretty high tolerance level for pain.  I've cut myself deep with a knife, crushed my ankle, scrapped my chin oh too many times, and not a single tear shed.  I've always tried to hide the injuries, more out of fear than pain.  Fear of letting my parents know I've once again injured myself, and they'll get all worked up and upset.  So I tend not to tell anyone, and heal myself of the injuries, eventually.  This time, I tried and I failed.  I am scared, still am.  When the pain is so not tolerable that every single slight movement makes me cringe, I am scared.  Scared of what is happening, scared of what may happen.  When the pain is unknown, it creates another vile of secrecy and fear.  Fear of the unknown is always the most potent fear.  At one point, I almost cried in pain.  That says a lot about the agony I am in right now.  And for the first time, I told my mum I needed to see a doctor because of back pain.  I reckoned there is no way I can hide this one away, seeing that I walk like a grandma, back hunched, hand clutching the back and walking like a snail.

The trip to the doc's earned me a haul of painkillers.  5 Types in fact.  I asked the doc "Are the painkillers strong, like really strong? Cos it fucking hurts like hell!" Ok, so I didn't use the 'F' word, nor the 'H' word, but I think I conveyed the message.  He gave me a smile and went on to put more line items in the prescription and said "These should work".  I would have liked to be shot in the back, instant gratification probably, but I'll let the medicines do their work first.  The diagnosis - Inconclusive.  Possibly muscle strain, but let's see how it heals in the next few days.  And I got myself 2 days of medical leave to rest my fucking back.  That's a plus. At least I'm not busy at my work place, so I can rest.  It will be kinda boring though, seeing that I'm like a vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuver.  Which probably means I'll be glued to the TV most of the time, watching TV series and sitcoms.  Wasting my time away.

I just want to get better, and I have to believe that I will.  Don't worry.  A little back pain is not going to kill me.  It might murder me though...

Riots, Haze and Fun Times

I'm back home, after finally completed my first business assignment in my newly minted position. My butt was overheated from sticking to the office chair for too long, itching to lift off.  Jakarta was the city, not my favourite city but was glad to be going somewhere, and close enough to have my visitor drop by.

Notoriously famous for its traffic, day in day out, we experienced it going to and back from the factory.  A 20min journey takes 1H in traffic. I don't mind distance, but I fucking hate being stuck in traffic not knowing what's ahead and why. I might have been rusty in operational audits, but just like diving, it comes back slowly and surely as the days go by.  People were nice and cooperative, which for sure made the whole process much more enjoyable.

The first week went by, pretty boring and standard stuff. Waiting for the weekend which was supposed to bring fun with a visitor coming, but as fate would have it, it was reduced down to a weekend of pretty much just watching movies and sitcoms in my hotel room alone.  Of course, I tried to force myself to sleep and catch up on sleep, but as always, sleep eludes me. Which is annoying! I'm away from home, no parents in sight, in an air-conditioned room with a big bed, and yet I still can't sleep.  Oh well, I figured Kimiko is my only solution but not happening over the weekend.

Just when I thought the week is not getting any more interesting, we were told there was a demonstration in the factory area, all roads were closed and we were advised not to go to work! Woohoo! No Monday Blues then! Yup, as fate would have it yet again, Indonesia decided to create some noise to strike against fuel price increase and coupled with our dear neighbour factory's dispute with workers, the union came out full force on Monday, blocking our way to work.  It all sounded so bloody exciting and interesting, and I could only get pictures sent in from my fellow auditee stuck in the factory showing the crowd gathered outside.  And so it was, another day spent in my hotel room, obviously working as well!

And just on the exact same day, the country I'm stationed in gave a nice present to the country I'm from!  Suddenly everywhere on Facebook, every single post on Facebook, by every single Friend from Singapore on Facebook was about just one topic - HAZE!  I never thought I would hear that word again, not when there was nothing mentioned last year and for quite some time.  As if on que with the demonstration, the world decided one demonstration was not enough, we need more news to show the world who we are!  So it was that HAZE index rose day after day after day, quite unlike the ST index.  And there I was, staying in Indonesia, breathing in fresh air and looking into clear blue skies, while my country mates suffer in the haze.  I did give a little smirk, sorry for being insensitive, but the irony of it was not lost on me.  It is just a little funny that the clean and green city was not as clean and green at that moment.  And so it was, that facebook became so boring for 5 days.  No surprising news about someone getting married out of the blue, so someone getting pregnant suddenly.  Because all I read about was Haze, Haze and more Haze.  But you know, Singapore has nothing much going in terms of exciting news, so I guess Haze is a topic that gets all citizens riled up. That's not often, which is good in a way.  But when it happens, everyone is talking about it.

Then I started to realize, everytime something really catastrophic happened in Singapore, I seem to be distinctly out of the picture!  The time when the MRT broke down nation-wide - Not in Singapore.  The time when massive flooding occurred in lots of area of Singapore - Not in Singapore.  This time the terrible Haze - Not in Singapore (as yet).  Count myself lucky to read about the misfortunates and not witness them.  And I shall not gloat about it because I do not wish to jinx it!

There were times of uncertainty in the factory, not knowing if the workers will come out again, and we were herded out of the factory early on some days to avoid being caught in any unfortunate incidents.  I tried to snap a picture of the small crowd gathered next door on Wednesday but my auditee kept advising against it.  Even my manager.  So with a security guard escorting me, I stood like 200m away from the real action, and didn't even had a good view of the crowd.  Still at least I was allowed to look for like 10sec.  Then another thought came to me - I was more excited about the fact that there was a demonstration than the fact that I need to work!  Go figure!

And then, I had a great second week in Jakarta.  The city sucks, still sucks.  Terrible traffic, and just didn't attract me much.  Just like Manila is to me.  Well, maybe Manila is slightly better than Jakarta, but still not my favourite cities. But I had fun towards the end of my trip.  The intrepid explorer from Lostbuanbajo came, and it was nice to have someone to explore the city with, have fun and to meet again! The drunken Russian couldn't make it in time though, could have been explosive and Legen-wait for it-dary if the 3 of us got together.  I can only think of one thing - ARAK. Oh and maybe just getting high :) But I know you got my virtual hug back in Bali.  It took the domestic flight from Jakarta and was delivered safely (what I was told).  If not, put a rain check on it.

If not for intrepid explorer, I would have been banned from taking the Trans Jakarta bus or any form of transport that is NOT the Blue Bird taxi.  And I have learnt not to tell/ask for suggestions from my client or colleagues because the only answer I will get is "NO, you cannot".  Fine.  A note on Trans Jakarta bus service.  I was impressed!  They are cool!  In a city like Jakarta, this bus system is like the Apple of the computer/IT world!  Air-conditioned, nicely maintained buses that run pretty often enough along selected routes, in dedicated lanes (means only the buses are allowed).  Good for escaping the traffic! And the network is pretty impressive too!  Not to mention for a price of IDR3,500, you get to travel the entire network as long as you do not exit the gantry!  Many of the main tourists spots or city centers are connected by the buses.  It is not that difficult to navigate once you get the map, but of cos the stations are not named after the landmark or specific locations, so you have to ask for the nearest stations.  Which may not always be true, given how different Indonesians give different answers.  But way cool!  A note - the section of the bus from the driver to the middle cabin is designated for women only! So no men allowed to sit in that section.  Which apparently, we found out too late.  Yup that was the cause for the pointing, staring and mumblings for all the aunties on board.    Yes, sexual harassment apparently is a major concern - for both the men and women probably.

Just when it couldn't get any better, on our last day, the factory closed as there was a planned demonstration of 3,000 protestors in the area.  I had hoped for the demonstration to come out more often during the week so I can skip going to the factory, but they decided Friday is the day they like best!  So we had a meeting in a cafe near our hotel.  But luckily that did not hinder our journey to the airport. Just when we were about to head home, the fucking PSI jumped to 400 that day.  And when I got off the airport, the second I stepped into the world's best airport, the stench hit me hard!  Even the world's best airport couldn't do anything.  And I thought to myself - Fuck, should have gone to Bali instead.  But unfortunately, Bali and Flores have to wait.  But I'll go back.  Hopefully soon enough.  I need my dose of the sea. Ah, maybe Bali not so soon.  But Flores maybe, for my rescue.

And of course, I remembered I had to come back for my powerboat course! Which I just completed.  2 day of intense theory lesson (which was as dry as paper), and a fun practical day out in the sea!  That was fun! The instructor gave us each a minute to speed across the water at full speed and the rush of air and smell of the sea was exhilarating!  And now, I have been certified as having completed my course.  Next step - take the fucking theory which only has a 50% passing rate, and you have to get 26 our of 30 questions correct!  Like the instructor said - Singapore has the highest criteria in the world because we always want to be number 1.  Yea right.  Damn it!  I now get 1 month to study for my theory.  So I need to start speaking marine.  No time to slack, have to get it right.  Practical comes after I tackle my theory.  Say, I haven't studied for years!  I think I can restart my brain.  Hopefully. After theory comes practical and I will become a certified skipper! When I get a boat, it will have a sundeck.  There is naked beach, and there is naked sundeck.  On my sundeck, it will be nude-tanning only.  Only Hunks Need Apply, Strict Conditions Apply.  Bikini babes are To Be Considered only.

Lo and behold, I am fucking tired again after I came back.  Alas, the week of good sleep was only temporary.  Solutions, Solutions, Solutions.  Maybe I do need Kimiko.

Eat, Pray, Love

Ever watched or read the movie/book? Neither have I. But I guess the gitsh of it is Julia Roberts went in search of herself in Bali, Eat, Pray and Love. End of story. Simple as that. We've seen it in movies read in books but they are called movies and Fiction for a reason. Julia Roberts is one in a trillion. Now I've done the Eat and Pray to death, been to the City of Love, City of Lights, City that never sleeps, Land of Smiles, Land of thousand Islands, Land of Dreams, Conquered Mountains and kissed a sea turtle! Where's the love? Once, not too long ago, I thought I finally had it but he broke my heart, I was naive and stupid, and I spiralled into my own world of sorrow and tears for months, no one knew not even him. But I managed to snap out of it and close for renovation. Till someone comes to complete the job. Hopefully.

I seem to have delved into an early onset of mid-life crisis, going through my bucket list and looking at where I'm heading, where I want to be. My friends have always said I'm too adventurous, travelling to too exotic a place. Exotic is a relative word. Bali is exotic to someone who's never been to Asia. I've never been but heck, maybe Bali is the answer!Yea, just have to seriously psyche myself up to pack my bags and get my ass over to Bali... Adventurous? Neh, I just live in a slightly more conservative country. I like to say I've experienced life. My body has indeed been bruised and battered all too many times but I never give up do I? Come on, review the list of things I've done/ experienced in life:

The Bummer
Health scare - checked
Excruciating pain - checked
Busted knees - checked
Broken toe - checked
Twisted ankle - checked (thrice)
Chipped/bruised/no toenails - checked (too many times)
Got lost temporarily(on land and underwater) - checked
Thrown off a bicycle - checked (ok maybe I exaggerate, fallen off a bicycle on a slope)
Chased by barking dogs - checked

The Merry
I Flashed Koh Lipe/Sipadan/Koh Tao/Bajawa - checked
Mooned the camera - checked
Emergency quick ascent from 14M underwater - checked
Got merrily drunk - checked
Half braided my short hair - checked
Swam with whalesharks - checked
Close encounter with Thresher sharks and Manta - checked
Won an arm wrestling contest with a BIG GUY - checked
Dolphins swimming nearby - checked
Serenaded privately by a local - Frank owes me that!!! I fully intend to cash in the promise

Which brings me to my uncompleted 100th dive - not forgotten and Yes I'll do it naked like a diver! 2 months ago, I told myself I'm never gonna hit 100 dives this year when I was at the 86th mark. Then I went to do 20 in Komodo. Goes to show never say never! I've learnt my lesson :) 7 yrs ago I would have never thought I would dive so much! My buddies have all but waved the white flag while my passion only slowly burned and grew. Once I was a novice diver who went with 3kg knowing 2 was all I need, then one day a diving epiphany occured and I KNEW knew diving, enjoyed the tranquility of being deep down. There really is a truth in 'nothing matters when you are deep in enjoyment and passion'. I totally didn't feel the fresh wounds on my legs when I dive! I question myself - should I take one step further and get myself DM certified? Somehow I don't think I trust myself to guide. Would you? I pride myself in being good with directions. Proven on land. But underwater is a different world. What kinda DM would I be? Get excited about the big school of fish and abandon my divers to play with it! Haha take that! Then again, my divers would have the comfort of knowing that their DM doesn't really run the risk of being low on air!

Anyway what was my point? I think I'm too lost in my new environment, therefore my mind wanders and ponders about anything and everything.  Once again, the Nth time, I'm asking myself Who What Where When. Every now and then I find myself in this predicament. Especially so when I'm experiencing a change in my life or when I'm going through a whole lot of shit in my life. Everyone has their own shit, no one's shit is shittier than the other, me included. And Murphy's law always never fails to come true when the 1st load of shit happens.  So I googled the opposite of Murphy's law - Yhprum's Law - Everything that can work, will work.  Hmm doesn't exactly mirror Murphy's (it should be Everything that can't go wrong, wouldn't go wrong)  Cos if WRONG can work, then it will work, hence fulfilling both Yhprum's Law AND Murphy's Law right?

My lower back still hurts. Sucks
My legs are still scar infested. Sucks

So I'm not making a whole lot story in this post, more like random thoughts floating through my mind right now. This new environment is not exactly agreeing with me now. Normally it doesn't take me long to swim with new change, new people. IF I put myself into it.  That is when it gets me thinking - Have I once again made a mistake? SO tired of putting myself in situations where I do not feel like I've gained an advantage or be in a better position than before.  I was afraid of this when I decided on this.  Questioning myself "Did i make the right move", "Would I regret it", "I'm scared it's going to be wrong or worse".  And now it makes me rethink back to those questions and I'm really afraid that my answer would be YES.  And then I would go on a solo vacation again and say to myself - Why am I going back to work?

Why did I agree to put myself into the torture of commuting 1.5H to work and 1.5H from work everyday?

I should stop updating my blog so frequently by ramblings.  It's a blog, not a diary :)

I miss the star-lit skies of Labuan.  I miss arak cos I only had a tiny sip of it!

It's still only the middle of the week.  Hang in there buddies... Long weekend next week!!

Coral Gone Dry

Coral has gone dry! How long will it survive without the moisture of the ocean water? Wouldn't you like to know!  I'd like to know too.  Counting back, been submerged about 42 times the past 4 months.  How active was Coral!!  Time to consider Operation Rescue Diver.

BTW, Coral aka Moi is now the name of the blog.  I figured after so many years, maybe it's time for a change.  Essentially, it is still my name, albeit a translated version of my chinese name.  Funny how I never thought my chinese name meant anything until people started asking what it means and I just figured - Split the words and translate them!  Of course, you have thousands of characters in the Chinese Language that it is not easy to exactly match each word to a meaning but my Chinese name 典珊, when broken down can mean 字典的典,珊瑚的珊(i.e. part of the word that forms dictionary and part of the word that forms corals)。That's how I came up with Dictionary of Corals.  Coincidentally, my surname has the same sound as FISH in Mandarin.  So how apt it is that my name can literally mean Dictionary of Corals and Fish (beautiful and colourful corals and fish I may add).  Of course, I can tell you the Korean meaning of my name Yeo Jeon Sun - Which means Female Warrior.  Imagine the Female Warrior of the Dictionary of Corals and Fish.  I feel like a mystical creature now.

So back to life.  Coral has gone dry for 1 week now.  The last time Coral went dry, she survived for 1.5months before immersing herself again, and after that another 2 months past before she iched for the sea again.  Matter of coincidence or convenience? Maybe a bit of both.  Now donning the business attire with my heels and projecting a professional demeanour needs some getting used to.  Especially for a so-called unconventional auditor that is Coral.  How's things at the new environment? Not sure.  A little disappointed at some stuff but also nervous and excited about the complexity that follows.  Would my disappointment outweigh my excitement? Only time will tell.

Somehow, my heart is taking a long long time to get down to business.  In the past, holiday withdrawal syndrome only lasts a flicker of an eye blink.  Now it gets harder and harder to swallow.  Why do I still dream and think about mingling with sea turtles, trevalis and Manta Ray when I'm typing away on my computer?  If there's a job to audit the underwater sea life, I'll be the first in line!

Coral: Hey sea turtle, you are not following protoccol! Underwater manual says that you don't give a fuck and you should just lazily swim around, not scurrying away!  I give you a RED!

Sea Turtle: Management oversight Coral.  We will immediately implement your recommendation.  You will see the next time you do a follow up audit that we will comply.

How fun would that be!

Now, my coral orientation marks have kinda peeled off 90%.  Still have a few painful blots that can't be peeled off but soon.  Now it's time for OPERATION VANITY PROJECT.  Despite the fact that I like roughing it out, I also like the fact that I maintain smooth flawless skin and legs that make people green with envy!  Call me vain or sissy, I don't care! I can endure the pain but I wouldn't endure the ugly scars that remain.  So Vitamin E and Aloe Oil are my friends for now.

On another note, I hurt my lower back when I was in Labuan.  I figured I probably hurt it when I dived into the water.  But who knows.  Things happen to me when I have no idea how, and when the pain starts or bruises show, I then realize I had done something or something happened.  And this is killing me!  Not the pain, the pain I can bear.  I didn't even blink my eyes when corals started chasing me and left their marks on me.  But this lower back thing is really irritating me much.  Makes me unable to perform in my yoga class when I KNOW for a fact that I always ace those poses.  Crunching my face and taking deep breathes, I tried and tried to bend greater than the current 30 degrees to reach my optimal but the pain shoots me up.  And it kills me deep that I can't do it anymore.  Damn you back!  Maybe I shouldn't have gone back to Yoga knowing for a fact that my lower back hurts, but me being me, I don't give up and obviously I didn't let a tiny ache stop me.  But probably I should now.  Think my yoga teacher unknowingly tried to contort me further and I almost screamed.  So I guess no yoga for me tomorrow, but I'll definitely go for a swim.  Can't just sit and be an invalid.  Hopefully I can be well again for next week.

Funny how the 1.5H daily commute each way to office is not as "fun" as the 2H ride to the dive sites.  "Your 1st dive site will be a 2H boat ride away" Okie Dokie, not a problem! 1.5H on the train, well ok I'll take it.  I know, I signed up for it knowing it would be like this.  So I've gotta man up and accept it.  Still, who knows?!?!  Everyone has a breaking point.  I broke mine a couple of times before at different stages of my life.  Who is to say when it will break again this time.

Ah another milestone.  My photo montages have hit 30 pieces!  Beginning from 2005 till date, excluding business trips.  Nice!

Coral needs to get it's edges realigned again now.  Cross fingers and hope this monthly realignment will come to an end soon and Coral can shine bright and pretty!

Updates

Just back from yet another vacation.  3 vacations in the past 4 months, i guess you can say vacation overdose?  Goes to show I really needed to get away and refresh myself.  Yes, I really needed those vacation.  The past year has not been kind to me.  Thought it started great and promising but all things just went downhill and almost fucking killed me.  Glad I finally found the escape and those vacation really helped to calm me down and find my inner peace.  Kinda.

Now, back from a fucking awesome 2 weeks trip, of which I spent 7 days diving, looking deep into the faraway ocean line, starry starry skies, mountains and volcanoes, meeting people who breath a new splash of life into me, I feel refreshed and ready for the next challenge that awaits me.  Yes, it still is intimidating walking into a totally new environment, not knowing if the people will like you or if you will like the people, if the environment suits you and if you will gel.  But I guess, you don't know if you don't try!  Better fight for your own happiness than be trapped in a mountain of sorrow and unhappiness.

Maybe this will be my final destination in life? Maybe not really but who knows? I might go off and become a free soul, dancing with the ocean one fine day when I'm done with life! Like I always say I will do but never really did do. I just hope that the next chapter will be kind to me.  I've had enough of the shit.  I think I deserve better.

Will work on my Indonesia travel blog soon.  Stay tuned.

回顾过去,瞻望未来/Reminiscence of the Past, Hopes for the Future

Time again for a post about the year passed and the year ahead.  Judging from my title, yes, this will be a bilingual post.  I've not written a chinese post in a long time!  The last was I guess back in 2008!  Time to pick up my chinese skills and get typing.  Especially given how chinese-immersed I have been recently.  Of course, being bilingual, I will translate the post to English at the end.  This is not a contract so neither Chinese nor English takes precedent in intepretation purposes.

————————————————————————————————————————
Phew, finally finished the chinese post! Took me a long time!  Too much to say about the past, too much.. Now the English version.

Time really flies.  I know it's a cliche to say this every year, but hey! Where did 2012 go to? It was just yesterday I started 2012, now it's 2013!! Oh and the end of the numbers game with regards to dates!  Yes, no 13th month in a year so our generation - No more numbers game unless you can outlive your children!

2012 has been an eventful year for me.  In both good and bad ways.  Ups and downs, happiness and sadness.  Good memories and bad recollections.  Things to remember and keep, things to try to forget and throw away.  My friend said my year has been a lot of turmoils.  Very true.

2012, the journey.  Kept in touch with a few friends from travels.  Some stayed close through constant communication, gossiping, talking, updating about good or bad things, some through facebook contact.  Made me think about my besties, when we were still in school, all single and free.  We would always keep in touch, gossiping or go out to shop and eat.  But now, they are all married and with kids, it's very hard now to gather like before.  This is life.  We have got to learn to accept it and move on.  No matter, they are still my besties, anything they need help, I'll always be there!

2012. The start. I was all geared up to face the year, happy and refreshed from my great year end trip the year before. Having met great people, been through fun times. Work seemed ok. Friends from travels came to visit, which was fun and cool! But I guess all good things will come to an end. Towards the later part of 2012, things started to change.  We used to talk/share/gossip on a constant basis, now no longer.  Things have changed and the vibe between us is no longer.  Things started to get worse, there was more stress.  It was an unhappy period.  I was hurt, upset.  Wanted to escape.

I'm more emotional and sensitive now than ever.  Age has got to do with it, I reckon.  Hey afterall, 2012 is my big year!  Stepped over to another era, another decade has passed!  Was flipping through old photos from more than 6 years ago.  Looking at them and marvelling at the changes through the years.  To me, to my friends, to things.  Re-read my diary from the past, wow, I have really changed!  Both physically and emotionally!  My thinking has definitely changed over the years!  Reading the entries, the happy times, the sad times, lots of emotions welled up in me.  I found my art book too!  Used to love drawing cartoon figures.  Realized I'm actually quite talented!  Just don't have the drive to nurture it.  Wow, imagine, I could have been an artist??

Surprise that I'm that emotional?  Hey I'm not an emotionless creature.  I may look aloof and tough, but I have feelings.  Yes, I do cry.  I've cried in 2012.  I've hurt in 2012.  Unexpected of me?

2012 - My mum went for an operation to correct a spinal issue.  It was a high risk operation but necessary for her to enjoy a better life to follow.  The operation went well and she has since recovered, albeit some after-effects.  But it was a good thing we opted for the operation.

Last quarter of 2012, lots of things happened that impacted me.  Lost weight, yes.  Not a lot in terms of numbers but apparently it is obvious.  Maybe work? But I'm healthy.  I always say - "I've just lst my fats percentage and gain muscles!"  My ability has been called into question, not directly but indirectly through words and actions of people around.  It doesn't feel good.  And it was torturous.  Coupled with another thing that happened in my private life, I hurt.  I cried.  Alone in my room.

Of course, it was not all bad in 2012.  Work took me to places I would never have gone otherwise.  Trips to US brought me over the moon shopping - cheap cheap cheap! Dubai visiting tallest building, To Munich visiting friend.  To shanghai to relive my shanghai dream, and had loads of fun with my friend there, going from party to party, club to club.  Yes I desperately needed those at that time.  Also got to meet new friends!  I was happy doing those things.  New friends helped me.

Also got to try new things and achieve dreams in 2012.  First time skiing in Japan.  Skiing is hard and painful!  Finally scaled Mt Kinabalu after 3 years of NATO (No Action Talk Only).  Halloween party after 5 years in Shanghai.  Miss Shanghai now...And not forgetting my year end trip.  Once again, I went alone unfortunately.  A very last minute planning.  Destination decided 2 weeks before take off, tickets booked 1 week before.  Still, I had a great time and got to know new, fun people!

What to look forward to in 2013?  The start was not good.  Fell sick when I got back from Thailand.  Fever, shivering, headaches, and blacked-out twice in 1 week!  But I'm going to Philippines for 2 weeks of sun, sand, sea and more diving during Chinese New Year! So excited about it.  Apparently, 2013 is a good year for Saggitarus in terms of romance and career.  Haha, hope so!  Horoscope!  How can 10million people be having the same good luck?

2013 - My Aunt passed away from stroke.  Suddenly and unexpected. No warning.  Apparently she had experienced consistent headaches the week before.  And just suddenly, passed away in her sleep.  It was vey heartbreaking attending her funeral.  Seeing how hurt and crushed my grandma was, standing there, insisting to be present on the last day even though she cannot send her off (the elder cannot send off the younger), seeing how crushed my cousins were.  It really hit me hard.  Tears flowed.  At times, I couldn't bring myself to be close to my grandma for fear that I would break down seeing and sensing her sadness.

2013.  Hope I don't have to cry.  Hope I'm healthy.  Hope there is a good development in my career. Hope people around me are healthy.  Hope for someone whom I care for and care for me.  Hope I strike ToTo top prize!!

Reflections and Sentiments

Been doing a lot of thinking and reflection these few days.  I attribute this to mid-life crisis, and the fact that I'm hitting a big milestone soon... Real soon.  Emotional.  What did I do?

First off, I choped off my hair, it was short to begin with (shoulder length), but I choped it even shorter, funky loop-sided hair cut, and coloured it RED!  It has been a long time since I last coloured my hair, probably 4 years back.  Suddenly I just had this great urge to do something, to change something.  Didn't like how I looked before, wanted to change, give myself a different style, like chopping off all the burdens and troubles, hopefully bring me a new light, a new luck!  Alot of people say when a woman cuts her hair, something has happened to make her decide on such a big change.  You go figure it out...

Then, I had the urge to pull out my history, my past, what made me who I am today, what was I 20 years ago.  I remembered I was this arty, creative person back when I was young, I remembered I kept an art book (ok, not a pro Art book, just a note book) where  started drawing cartoons and pictures based on samples.  I'm not really those who can just create a new drawing, but I can draw good if I have a sample to look at.  After much searching, pulling books out of my pile, I found it!!

Imagine my joy and the emotional feelings I felt, flipping through the pages, trying to relieve the past.  That was from 15 years ago, when I still kept sticker books.  Then I started thinking more.  I used to be good at Arts & crafts, I did origami!  Made thousands of stars and filled up bottles, giving to friends as gifts.  I made origami swans!  And other origamis.  I tied friendship bands, chinese knots, necklaces.  I did all those things when I was young.  I liked those things!  I even remember I was good at moulding clay figurines!  Now, I'm an auditor!  What a change!  But not a conventional auditor, as people have always commented. "You are the most unconventional auditor", "Your hairstyle is too havok", "You dress very unlike auditor".  Honey, think out of the box!  It's 2012, the world may be ending soon, why follow the bandwagon.

Sometimes I do regret not living my life earlier.  Exploring, being independent, travelling much younger.  These are some of the things, when you look back, you think "What If".

I dug out my old diaries and old letters and greeting cards.  Yes, I'm a hoarder!  But I keep valuable things, like these memories from the past!  I spent a few nights, laying on my bed, reading through my old entries, reading the letters from best friends from my past, greeting cards from friends.  Brought back a lot of old memories, good and sad.  Reading the letters, I realized how much I miss my old friends from different phases of my life.  And how life can just easily dissolve some old ties.  It is sad, but sometimes that is life.

And my diaries, how I have changed in the past 10 years. I started keeping a diary since JC times, writing about things, my feelings, relationships and stuff.  Reading them, I realized I had a lot of anger pent up, only let out through writing in my diary.  Being a teenager, of course the thinking was rather immature.  It was a really interesting read, reading how teenager I was, thinking about small insignificant matters.  A snippet - I used to think about getting myself a boyfriend so much!  Haha, 10 years ago!  Oh man!  Also, entries about my feelings, my relationships or the lack thereoff etc.  The fun times, the happy times, and the sad events.  From then through now.

It was really emotional for me, reading those events that happened.  I smiled, I laughed, I cried.  Yes, I cried.  Surprising isn't it.  Must be age.  Sorry but I am not able to reveal the contents of my diary, or what made me cry or smile.  You can deduce by yourself, make your own guess and keep it to yourself.  Although I did regret stopping my diary for a period of my life, where I didn't get to record down some happy events in my life during that point in life.  I really do regret it now.  And I think I lost some of my diary entries when I scribbled them on other notepads.  Very regretful, cos they are memories, be it good or sad ones.  I vow to keep my diary more up-to-date.  To write more about me, my feelings, what happened.  It is really a good read, 5-10 years down the road.

Writing this entry, feeling so tired.  Yes, spent last night reading my diary again.  Old memories made me sentimental and cried.  It is age, must be age that led to this reflection of life, thinking about my life.  But I guess, it is good to do this once in a while.  Makes you think about your entire existence in the world!

I started some Arts again, with paintings.  Ok not free style paintings but painting with some aid.  And I really enjoyed it.  I can get soo engrossed into it that I will keep on doing it till late hours.  It is hard work but I really like doing it.  I think I do have that artistic seed in me, but not enough creative power to nurture it.  Who knows!  If I had enough willpower, I may have become a famous artist now, or some creative person!  Maybe that's why I'm working in an advertising and marketing industry, although not as a creative.  Keep on dreaming....

Updates

Been 1 month since my last random post.  Yes I still miss my beanie star, it just itches when he's not there for me to hug and grab.  But I guess that's life!  You win some, you lose some, at the end of the day life still goes on and you have to.

Been to Shanghai in May for work then to Beijing in June for work.  Man, I partied wayyyy too much during these 2 trips!  I must say, the most I partied ever since ages ago.  Too much drinking, but it was fun though.  Nice bars/clubs I went to in both cities
Shanghai
It's an exclusive club, open like once a month for public while the other days are reserved for privat events.  Lo and Behold, I've always complained that I don't have the luck ever when it come to going to the right place at the right time.  My friend always say I don't have the luck, but lady luck was with me that night we went!  We were trying out luck to see if Haven was open and it was!!!  So we just walked in, overjoyed at 830pm only to discover that it doesn't start until 9pm.  Great!  And it was raining outside so no point heading to another bar.  So we waited and waited and waited.  Until after 10pm when the party really started.  It was just alright, not exactly really fun, music was alright but the crowd was just alright... I guess it will be more fun during the private/themed parties.  But!  We did get a free drink offered to us!  The bartender was saying it was from the boss but he couldn't even pronounce the name correctly.  We politely rejected cos we were too confused by what happened that we just returned the drink.  Now that we think about it, quite stupid to reject a free drink! Haha

Richbaby
2nd stop of the night, we went to Richbaby, a local shanghai club.  My friend wanted to bring me to experience the local club.  So we left Haven around 11pm, and went to Richbaby to join her group of friends.  Wow!  Totally different environment!! It was misty and loud and smoky!  The music was blasting real loud and it was smoky inside.  The night we went, they had an alcohol event so there were dancers.  The music is actually quite good!  So we sat and drank Chivas+green tea while playing dice.  We were supposed to stay for 2H, ended up drinking for 6H!! Yes, from 12 midnight till 6am!  Geez.. I was soooo wasted by the time i walked out and tired..  Those mix was lethal!

MUSE
Friend from Singapore came, so we decided to give MUSE a try, hearing good things about it.  Actually our conclusion was that MUSE 1 was the good one, but it was closed when we went, so we had only MUSE 2 to go to.. As usual, we went at like 930pm, no crowd, and the place seemed dead.  Moral of the story - Never step into a club before 10pm.  So we ordered jugs of vodka+orange.  The drink seriously lacked punch, but we had 2 jugs, and we drank a little fast, which we did not feel at that point in time.  It hit Jason real big after the night!  It was not as fantastic though...

FYI, MUSE 1 has closed, and have moved to a new location at The Bund.  Recently re-opended.  Check it out!  I will have to check it out the next time I go Shanghai..

M1NT
My shanghai friend called me while we were @ MUSE and told us she had tickets for M1NT, so obviously we had to go!! FYI, M1NT is a VIP only club.  The only time I went in was last year with my shanghai friend when I had to pretend I was sooo into exploring M1NT and I was leaving soon that we were allowed into the VIP club.  Else, you can't really go in if you are not a member or if you have not booked a table (which cost you min spend RMB2K)

M1NT is a great club!!! The music is really good, the dance floor is packed and the people there are, let's just say, eye-candy :-) And the drinks are potent!  Albeit coming at a higher price.  And we danced the night away....  Before long, we made our way out of the club but not before stopping for a short while @ a local bar full of prostitutes...  Then it was way home for us all, and Jason was seriously wasted...  Well, actually I felt kinda wasted on my way back.. It's never good to party so hard on weekdays

Beijing
XIU
My friend highly recommended this bar as one of the best clubs in Beijing.  And so I went with a group of people.  Cool!  I love that place!  It has a really nice outdoor sitting area, and a really good live band playing from 930pm, every half hour.  The music is good and it gets you just dancing straight away!  Surprisingly, the drinks are cheaper than those I have paid in Shanghai (MUSE excluded).  And it was a game of getting the German drunk during the night.  I think we had at least 5-6 cocktails (specifically asked for extra alcohol) and a couple of beers.  That got me really high but not really drunk at that point in time.  Yet, Mission Unaccomplished!  Try Harder next time.  I was fine until I got into my room and passed out...

Elements
Nursing a headache, and vowing not to drink again, you know you can NEVER trust the Germans to help you keep the promise.  But I limited myself to just 2 drinks.  Went to the Elements Club.  See that guy @ bottom right corner of the picture?  I got this picture from the Internet and surprise surprise! He was the one who brought us to the club that night!  Regular!!

Well, that club was very much like Richbaby in Shanghai, loud music blasting away, but it was nicer than Richbaby.  Smaller yes, but less smoky and looks a little more upper class.  Music was nice though but we had to stuff paper into our ear drums to snuff out a bit of the loudness.  Did I forget to mention ladies get in for free?  Gents have to pay RMB100.  Apparently, they just started collecting entrance fees.

So we bunked in with a group of Chinese nationals with a table and apparently the girls were wayyy too drunk that they started dancing with each other, hugging and kissing each other, falling all over each other.  Geez, we just stood here and watch in horror/amusement!  At one point, 2 ladies fell down while kissing each other on the lips!  Cool, that was a little amusing though...

Another nice little chill out place - Migas @ Sanlitun Nali Patio 6th floor.  A nice rooftop bar with sofas and comfy chairs to just chill out and have a great view around.  I will for sure head back again, just like XIU.

R.I.P.

Beanie Bag Star
28.11.2006 - 3.5.2012

Fond Memories through these 5.5 years,
You have been beside me every night (except the ones when I was travelling),
You have travelled across the sea to Chiangmai and Perhentian,
I've hugged you and squeezed you to death all these nights,
Until ultimately you started losing your volume, your vitality,
I didn't even realize you were losing your 'life'
That you were 'bleeding' these past few nights
I had ignorantly brushed off those loose white foams across my body
Thinking where the hell they came from
Until yesterday
When I got ready to sleep and found you missing
And heard the terrible news from my mom
"I threw it away"
The shock, horror and sadness that filled my heart

In Memory of Beanie Bag Star
Your first public appearance
You will be missed...

Hello 2012, Goodbye 2011

Finally 2012 has arrived. This is supposed to be the last year of Earth, according to Mayan predictions. True or Not?Believe or Not? Up to individual I guess.

1 month has passed in 2012, yet to reflect upon my resolutions made in 2011 and hopes for 2012. Been rather busy in Jan 2012, travelling, back for a few days and traveling again. Finally have the time to rest and think it through..

What was made in 2011:

1 - Knee is feeling MUCH better the entire 2011. Been training real hard, working my quads, hamstring, calf etc etc to really strengthen my leg muscles.

2 - Finally I'm going to scale Mt K this year!! End March is the date, and we're going to do it in 1 day! Saves the RM400 per night accomodation at base camp. Going to be tough, but I'm going to make sure I complete it!

3 - Finally able to really play tennis after being out of action almost the entire 2010. And I feel like I'm getting better, though still not quite there. Think I need to change my racket, it's making me hit weird..

4 - I've been reading even more in 2011. Done the Wheel of Time series till the last book available, and literally borrowing every single book available to read on my commute to work! And I bought a Kindle in 2012!! Means, no more waiting for books to be available in library, bringing those thick books to and fro work..

Proud of myself. I've pretty much achieved lots in 2011 :) 2011 had also been an important year for me, and a fun year too! A year of great travels and great fun - Fantastic trip to Miri in May, paradise vacation in Palawan in June, hikes and camping in Kota Tinggi and Sister Island with a group of really funny people, a fantastic Xmas and NYE vacation in South Thailand. Met loads of really great people and friends along the way and opened my eyes to alot of new experiences and happenings.

Also, I quit my job in May 2011, finally ending some sad, unhappy months of work in my old job with several unhappy incidences. Yup, the overseas assignment negotiation fell through, but look at it from the bright side - it may have been a blessing in disguise! If I had gone to US, I wouldn't have gone to Paradise Palawan, I wouldn't have met those funny and hilarious friends, I probably would have neglected my tennis. Well though I might have gone to Peru (Macchu Pichu). I guess everything happens for a reason, and it's all fated to happen whatever way it turned out to be!

With the new job, I've been to US 3 times in 2011, great shopping trips!! Bought loads of great deals online and at outlets. But it has been real tiring travelling >20 hours and having to endure the day and night time difference.

2012, a new beginning?!?!

What will 2012 bring for me? Went to Japan for skiing during CNY - a 1st for me! Enjoyed it but it was tough. Will I try it again? No idea.. Heading to Dubai for work in Feb, another 1st, and looking quite forward to it! I'm so going to Burj Khalifa! Sabah trip in Mar/April, another adventure I'm so looking forward to.. Then?? No idea! Hopefully another great year end trip to bring in the new year. Oh, and I have just made a 6-pack challenge (6 pack referring to abs) which I know for shizzle I'm not going to win anyways, but I've watched too much of Barney to be influenced by his "Challenge Accepted" anytime and anywhere...Who says the world is ending on 20 Dec 2012?!?!
